Home tomorrow!

My little suitcase packed, tickets and passport ready, alarm clock set for 5am (!!!). Good night, sweet dreams, see you in Warsaw!!

Radio Nova

When you spend a couple of hours every day in front of the microscope and the only live particles in the room are some poorly interactive mouse eggs, that you just got out of her dead body, you find it pretty important to have a good background music coming out of the radio. I go on testing the stations one by one and so far my favourite is Radio Nova, on 101.5 fm. If you wanna check it out online, go here.

Velib'

I just received my Velib' card which means that from now on 24/7 I can ride on one of 17000 bicycles available for public use in 1202 stations around Paris!
Each station has 15 or more bikes or spaces and paying a fee of 29€/year you are authorized to free bike rides for up to 30 minutes. Stations are not further than 300m from each other, so you can leave it wherever it's comfortable for you or exchange after half an hour for another one.
The system was introduced on 15 July 2007 after succesful pioneering programme in Lyon and is now the largest system of it's kind in the world.

La ville est plus belle à vélo :D

Marché de la Bastille

I am lucky to have my apartment very close from Boulevard Beaumarche along which every Thursday and Sunday there's a market with fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood, cheese, bread, meat, mushrooms, nuts, honey and flowers. It's really good quality and a lot of local people come here for the good prices and professional service. Each time I have a hard time deciding on just one product. I go on tasting, the fish and cheese especially is soooo much better than what you can get in Warsaw.

Le Tour Eifflel by night

Last night we went to have a bottle of wine under the Eiffel Tower. It looks really stunning with the Christmas illumination.

Le Baron Rouge

Le Baron Rouge is a little bar in my neighbourhood where you can have a quick glass of wine and a plate of fresh oysters. It's always full and you can meet there elderly parisians, businessmen, mums with kids, everyone having their treat standing by one of the improvised tables like the one on the picture. It's localized very close to the open-air weekend food market, so Konrad and I went there to have a try of their special on Saturday morning, before getting our things for lunch and it was already quite busy. I had it recommanded by my boss Stephane and I'll keep spreading the word to all my visitors who will dare to try a fresh oyster.

My apartment in Paris

I had a good motivation to finally tide up my apartment (a 'studio', I should say, as there's just one room), because Konrad came to visit. It takes ridiculously quick to mess it up again so right away I took some photos to share with you.
As you can see it's not very spacius, but quite cosy and anyone of you who wishes to visit personally and maybe stay a while in Paris is more than welcome.

What do you think?

Lab christmas party

Even though there's still some time left to Christmas, my busy labmates couldn't find another day where we'd all be available to celebrate together and exchange presents, later than today. Everyone prepared a dish or brought cheese, dessert or wine.

Agnieszka, organized all the pretty decoration and 2 really delicious dishes: chicory with goat cheese, walnuts and home made caramel, and a herring and dried plum salad, that really made this lunch taste like Christmas dinner to me.

I made a winter fruit salad with dried apricots, figs and fresh pears, apples and pomegranate in vanilla-lemon-anise syrup, which turned out to be really yummi and fit well on the Christmas table. Find the recipe here.

Marie-Emily brought all different types of cheese, these in the front are Camembert and Brie, that have absolutetly nothing to do with the ones sold in Poland under the same name. These here are a lot more mature, intense and really delicious. Altough I'm afraid they wouldn't yet be appreciated by the statistical Kowalski...

The jar in the back of the table is foie-gras, home made by the family of Agathe, a colleague from the lab. It tastes like a paté, altough is a lot more delicate. I tasted once, put a 'tak' on my list of things I wanted to try, and honestly - don't think I'll ever come back to it again..

I made an attempt to prepare a polish Christmas soup - barszcz. It looked really promising during it's preparation, but the illusion ended after adding the spices: I couldn't find any from the original polish recipe, so I decided to add some random ones that I found in the nearest supermarket. The result was far from satisfactory - it tasted like leftover water after pickles mixed with overboiled carrots.. :)
I spared my labmates the effort to make a happy face while tasting it and spilled it all in my sink.

It was hard to come back to my experiments after all those goodies and a couple of glasses of wine. And with all the excess food we prepared it looks like the lunches will have to repeat in the following days :)
